Lot 4879
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 17 mm, 2.72 g), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Antiochia, irregular mint, after 325. CONSTAN-TINVS AVG Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. PROVIDEN-TIAE AVGG / SMANTB Campgate with no doors and two turrets; above, star. Cf. RIC 63 (for prototype). Very rare. Small die breaks and with and old scratch on the obverse, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

The style of this coin is clearly unofficial, indicating that it is a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation, copying RIC 63 (Antioch). Copies of Antiochene coins are much rarer than those of western mints.
